Understanding Bible Translations: A Helpful Guide

One of the first questions new Bible readers ask is, "Which translation should I use?" The answer depends on your purpose and preferences.

Bible translations generally fall along a spectrum from formal equivalence (word-for-word) to dynamic equivalence (thought-for-thought). The King James Version (KJV) is a formal equivalence translation known for its beautiful, poetic language. While some find its archaic English challenging, it remains one of the most beloved translations worldwide.

Other popular formal equivalence translations include the New King James Version (NKJV) and the English Standard Version (ESV). Dynamic equivalence translations like the New International Version (NIV) and the New Living Translation (NLT) focus on conveying the meaning in contemporary language.

For study purposes, many people prefer a more literal translation. For devotional reading, a more readable translation may be preferable. Using multiple translations side by side can provide richer understanding of the text.

At ReadBible, we primarily use the King James Version (KJV) because it is in the public domain and has been trusted by believers for over 400 years. Whatever translation you choose, the most important thing is to read consistently and let God’s Word transform your life.
