Overcoming Spiritual Dryness: When God Seems Far
If you’re going through a season where God feels distant, you’re not alone. Some of the greatest heroes of faith experienced similar valleys. David cried out, "Why art thou cast down, O my soul?" (Psalm 42:11). Even Jesus on the cross quoted Psalm 22: "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?"
Spiritual dryness is a common experience, but it doesn’t mean God has abandoned you. In fact, these seasons can be some of the most formative times in your spiritual journey if you respond with faith rather than giving up.
Here are steps to navigate spiritual dryness. First, be honest with God about how you feel. The Psalms are full of raw, honest prayers. God can handle your doubts and questions. Second, continue the disciplines even when you don’t feel like it. Read your Bible, pray, and worship—not because you feel like it, but because God is worthy. Third, remember truth over feelings. Your emotions are real but not always reliable. God’s Word is truth regardless of how you feel. Fourth, reach out to other believers for support and encouragement.
Remember the promise of Hebrews 13:5: "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." Even when you can’t feel His presence, God is with you. This season will pass, and your faith will be stronger for it.
