What the Bible Says About Mental Health and Emotional Wellness
The Bible has much to say about our mental and emotional health. While Scripture is not a substitute for professional help, it provides truth, comfort, and hope that are foundational for emotional wellness.
Anxiety is addressed repeatedly in God’s Word. Philippians 4:6 instructs us, "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God." The promise that follows is beautiful: "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Depression and despair are not foreign to the people of God. Elijah, David, and Jeremiah all experienced deep emotional pain. Psalm 34:18 offers comfort: "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."
God’s design for emotional wellness includes several elements. Community—we were not meant to struggle alone (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10). Rest—Sabbath rest is God’s gift (Mark 2:27). Renewed thinking—Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. Prayer—casting our cares on God (1 Peter 5:7). And hope—the confident expectation that God is working all things for good (Romans 8:28).
If you’re struggling with mental health, know that seeking professional help is not a lack of faith. God provides healing through many means, including counseling and medicine. You are not alone, and there is hope.
