Romans Chapter 1
KJV — King James Version · 32 verses
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
Spiritual Insight
Paul introduces himself not with titles of pride, but as a servant — someone who belongs completely to Jesus. There's something beautiful about finding your identity in who you serve rather than what you've achieved.
(Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
Spiritual Insight
The gospel wasn't a surprise — God had been whispering about it through prophets for centuries. He's always been preparing the way, even when people weren't listening.
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
Spiritual Insight
Jesus was born into a real family line, with a real human story. God didn't stay distant — He entered our world with skin on, connected to David's heritage.
And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
Spiritual Insight
The resurrection wasn't just a miracle — it was God's way of publicly declaring who Jesus truly is. Power and holiness met in that empty tomb.
By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
Spiritual Insight
Grace isn't just a warm feeling — it comes with a calling. Paul received grace and was sent out to invite all nations into a life of trusting obedience.
Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
Spiritual Insight
You're part of this story too. Among all the people God has called, you are included — not as an afterthought, but as someone intentionally invited.
To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Spiritual Insight
Beloved and called to be saints — that's how God sees the people in Rome, and that's how He sees you. Grace and peace aren't just greetings; they're gifts He keeps giving.
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
Spiritual Insight
Paul's first instinct is gratitude. Before teaching or correcting, he simply thanks God for the faith of these people he's never even met. Their reputation for believing has traveled far.
For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
Spiritual Insight
Praying without ceasing doesn't mean mumbling words all day — it means someone is always on your heart. Paul carried the Roman believers in his spirit constantly.
Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.
Spiritual Insight
Even Paul's travel plans were submitted to God's will. He had desires and made requests, but he trusted that God's timing and path would be better than his own.
For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
Spiritual Insight
There's a longing here — Paul genuinely wants to be with them face to face, not just to give something but to build something lasting together.
That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
Spiritual Insight
Encouragement isn't one-directional. Paul expects to be comforted by their faith just as much as he hopes to strengthen theirs. Real community works both ways.
Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
Spiritual Insight
Paul tried again and again to visit Rome, but something kept blocking him. Even apostles face delays and detours — it doesn't mean the desire was wrong.
I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.
Spiritual Insight
Paul felt a debt of love toward everyone — educated or not, cultured or rough around the edges. The gospel isn't picky about its audience.
So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.
Spiritual Insight
There's an eagerness here — Paul can't wait to share the good news. When something has changed your life, you naturally want to pass it on.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Spiritual Insight
Not ashamed. In a world that mocks faith as weakness, Paul plants his flag. The gospel is God's power to save anyone who believes — no exceptions.
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
Spiritual Insight
From first to last, it's all about faith. Righteousness isn't earned by climbing a ladder — it's received by trusting the One who's already climbing down to meet you.
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
Spiritual Insight
God's wrath isn't random anger — it's a response to people who suppress truth they already know. There's a sadness in it, like watching someone push away a hand that's reaching out.
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
Spiritual Insight
The knowledge of God isn't hidden behind locked doors — it's visible within us. Deep down, everyone has a sense that there's something more.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
Spiritual Insight
Creation itself is a kind of testimony — the sky, the mountains, the ocean all whisper about God's power and nature. You don't need a theology degree to notice it.
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
Spiritual Insight
The tragedy isn't that people don't know God — it's that they know but don't say thank you. Ingratitude darkens the heart faster than almost anything else.
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Spiritual Insight
There's a painful irony here — people who claim to be the smartest often miss what matters most. Wisdom without humility becomes its own kind of foolishness.
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Spiritual Insight
Trading the glory of the immortal God for statues of birds and animals seems absurd, yet we all do it in our own ways — swapping something infinite for something we can control.
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Spiritual Insight
Sometimes God's judgment looks like simply letting people have what they've been chasing. When hearts insist on their own way, God steps back — and that's the most painful consequence of all.
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Spiritual Insight
Worshipping created things instead of the Creator is the root of so much brokenness. We were made to look up, not around, for what our hearts truly need.
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Spiritual Insight
When people exchange what's natural for what's distorted, it's a sign of a deeper exchange that happened in the heart first. Brokenness has a way of cascading.
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Spiritual Insight
Paul describes the painful consequences of abandoning God's design. There's grief in his words, not contempt — he's watching people hurt themselves.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
Spiritual Insight
When people decide God isn't worth keeping in their thoughts, God honors that choice — and the resulting emptiness of a reprobate mind is devastating.
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Spiritual Insight
This is a mirror, not a pointing finger. Paul lists the messy reality of what human life looks like when turned inward — envy, murder, deceit, malice. We've all been somewhere on this list.
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
Spiritual Insight
Gossip, pride, disobedience to parents — these aren't dramatic sins, they're the everyday kind that erode relationships quietly. Paul doesn't rank them; they all matter.
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
Spiritual Insight
Without understanding, covenant-breaking, without natural affection — these describe a world where promises mean nothing and tenderness has dried up. It's a lonely picture.
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
Spiritual Insight
The deepest problem isn't just doing wrong — it's applauding others who do. When a society celebrates what destroys it, the brokenness has gone all the way down to the roots.
