Proverbs Chapter 7
KJV — King James Version · 27 verses
My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
Spiritual Insight
Keep my words and treasure my commands — it's the language of precious things. Wisdom isn't just advice to consider; it's a treasure to guard with your life.
Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
Spiritual Insight
Keep my commandments and live — treat them as the apple of your eye. What you protect most fiercely reveals what you value most deeply.
Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
Spiritual Insight
Bind them on your fingers, write them on your heart — make wisdom visible and internal. It should be something others see in your actions and you feel in your core.
Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:
Spiritual Insight
Call wisdom your sister, understanding your intimate friend — this is a relationship, not a textbook. The closer you are to wisdom, the safer your life becomes.
That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
Spiritual Insight
The purpose of this intimacy with wisdom is protection — she keeps you from the stranger who flatters with empty words. A friend of wisdom is an enemy of deception.
For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
Spiritual Insight
Solomon positions himself as a careful observer, watching life unfold from his window. Sometimes the wisest thing you can do is watch and learn from others' mistakes.
And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
Spiritual Insight
He spotted a young man lacking judgment — not evil, just empty of understanding. Vulnerability often doesn't look like rebellion; it looks like naïveté.
Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
Spiritual Insight
He was walking near her corner, heading toward her house — proximity became the first mistake. You don't fall into temptation from a distance; you wander into it step by step.
In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
Spiritual Insight
It happened at twilight, in the evening, in the dark of night — darkness was both the setting and the metaphor. Sin loves the cover of darkness because it hides what shame would reveal.
And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
Spiritual Insight
She met him dressed for seduction, with a crafty heart — temptation comes prepared and intentional. It doesn't stumble into your path; it positions itself there.
(She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
Spiritual Insight
She is loud and restless, never staying at home — there's an instability that marks the life of temptation. Restlessness masquerades as excitement but leads to exhaustion.
Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
Spiritual Insight
Now in the streets, now lying in wait at every corner — she's everywhere and persistent. Temptation doesn't give up easily; it keeps finding new angles of approach.
So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
Spiritual Insight
She seized him and kissed him with a brazen face — boldness without shame. Temptation doesn't blush; it acts with confidence that makes resistance feel awkward.
I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
Spiritual Insight
She uses religion as a cover — I've made my peace offerings, I've paid my vows. Even spiritual language can be twisted to justify unspiritual behavior. Beware of holy-sounding excuses.
Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
Spiritual Insight
I came out specifically to find you — temptation makes you feel chosen and special. But being someone's target isn't the same as being someone's treasure.
I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
Spiritual Insight
She's prepared everything — beautiful bed coverings, fine linen from Egypt. Sin always presents an attractive setting; the staging is designed to make you forget the cost.
I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
Spiritual Insight
Myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon — the finest perfumes mask the foulest reality. When everything smells wonderful, it's easy to forget where the fragrance leads.
Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
Spiritual Insight
Let us enjoy love until morning — the invitation sounds so natural and harmless. But what feels like love in the dark often looks like ruin in the morning light.
For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
Spiritual Insight
The husband is away on a long journey — she uses his absence as an opportunity. Sin thrives in the gaps of accountability, when no one seems to be watching.
He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.
Spiritual Insight
He took money and won't be back until the appointed day — there's a calculated timeline to temptation. It plans around the windows when consequences seem farthest away.
With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
Spiritual Insight
With much persuasion and flattering lips, she compelled him — relentless words wear down resistance. When someone keeps talking and keeps flattering, the will to say no slowly erodes.
He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
Spiritual Insight
He followed her like an ox to slaughter, like a deer stepping into a trap — he went willingly, unaware of the end. Sin's greatest power is making the doomed feel free.
Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
Spiritual Insight
Until the arrow pierces his liver, like a bird rushing into a snare — he didn't know it would cost his life. Ignorance of consequences doesn't prevent them; it only ensures surprise.
Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
Spiritual Insight
Listen to me now, you children — Solomon pulls back from the story to address you directly. He's told the tale so you won't become the next chapter.
Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
Spiritual Insight
Don't let your heart turn aside to her ways — the battleground is always the heart. Before the feet wander, the heart has already started leaning.
For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
Spiritual Insight
She has struck down many, even strong men — no one is immune. Strength, status, and experience don't protect you from the kind of temptation that targets the heart.
Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.
Spiritual Insight
Her house is the road to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death — this is the final destination. Every step toward temptation is a step deeper into a place you can't escape.
