Holy Bible/Proverbs/Chapter 20

Proverbs Chapter 20

KJV — King James Version · 30 verses

1

Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

Spiritual Insight

Wine can mock and strong drink can make us rage — being led astray by them is not wisdom. True strength lies in self-mastery, not in what we consume.

2

The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

Spiritual Insight

Provoking a king's anger is like threatening your own life. Authority carries real weight, and disrespecting it has serious consequences.

3

It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.

Spiritual Insight

It's actually honorable to avoid unnecessary conflict. Only fools feel the need to constantly stir things up.

4

The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

Spiritual Insight

The sluggard makes excuses — it's too cold to work — then has nothing when harvest comes. Procrastination today creates poverty tomorrow.

5

Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Spiritual Insight

Good counsel is like deep water — it's there, but you need understanding to draw it out. Wisdom requires the patience to go deep.

6

Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

Spiritual Insight

Everyone claims to be good and faithful, but how rare is a truly trustworthy person? Let's strive to be that rare find.

7

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

Spiritual Insight

When a person of integrity walks faithfully, their children are blessed in their wake. Our character creates a legacy that outlasts us.

8

A king that sitteth in the throne of judgment scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

Spiritual Insight

A wise leader can discern and scatter evil just by looking carefully. Righteous leadership brings clarity and justice.

9

Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

Spiritual Insight

Who can honestly say they've made their heart completely clean? This rhetorical question reminds us all of our need for grace.

10

Divers weights, and divers measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

Spiritual Insight

Dishonest weights and measures disgust the Lord — cheating in small things still matters to God. Integrity shows up in the details.

11

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Spiritual Insight

Even children are known by their actions — character shows early. What we do reveals who we really are, regardless of age.

12

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.

Spiritual Insight

God made both the hearing ear and the seeing eye. Our very capacity to perceive and understand comes from Him — every sense is a gift.

13

Love not sleep, lest thou come to poverty; open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread.

Spiritual Insight

Don't love sleep so much that you fall into poverty — wake up and work, and you'll have enough. Discipline in rest leads to abundance in provision.

14

It is naught, it is naught, saith the buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.

Spiritual Insight

The buyer always complains about the price, then brags about the deal afterward. Human nature hasn't changed — we all want to feel like we got the better end.

15

There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

Spiritual Insight

Gold and rubies are plentiful compared to lips that speak knowledge. Wise words are the rarest and most precious treasure.

16

Take his garment that is surety for a stranger: and take a pledge of him for a strange woman.

Spiritual Insight

If someone is foolish enough to guarantee a stranger's debt, they stand to lose even what covers them. Financial prudence is a form of wisdom.

17

Bread of deceit is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

Spiritual Insight

Deceitful gain tastes sweet at first, but ends up like a mouthful of gravel. Short-term pleasure from dishonesty leads to long-term pain.

18

Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice make war.

Spiritual Insight

Plans succeed with good counsel, and even war should be waged with careful advice. Don't go into any major decision alone.

19

He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.

Spiritual Insight

A gossip reveals secrets, so be careful about who you confide in. If someone flatters too freely, they probably can't be trusted with your deeper truths.

20

Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.

Spiritual Insight

Cursing your parents puts out your light in deep darkness. Honoring father and mother isn't just a command — it's connected to our own wellbeing.

21

An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

Spiritual Insight

An inheritance gained too quickly may not be blessed in the end. Easy come, easy go — lasting wealth is usually built through patience and diligence.

22

Say not thou, I will recompense evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save thee.

Spiritual Insight

Don't say 'I'll get even' — instead, wait on the Lord to bring justice. Letting go of revenge is hard, but trusting God with the outcome brings true peace.

23

Divers weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

Spiritual Insight

Dishonest weights and false balances are offensive to God — He repeats this because fairness in business matters deeply to Him.

24

Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

Spiritual Insight

Our steps are directed by the Lord, so how can we fully understand our own path? There's mystery in God's guidance that calls for trust rather than complete comprehension.

25

It is a snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and after vows to make enquiry.

Spiritual Insight

Making hasty vows about what is holy can become a trap. We should think carefully before making promises to God — our words carry real spiritual weight.

26

A wise king scattereth the wicked, and bringeth the wheel over them.

Spiritual Insight

A wise king discerns the wicked and deals with them decisively. Good leadership requires both the vision to see evil and the courage to confront it.

27

The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the belly.

Spiritual Insight

The human spirit is like a lamp that God uses to illuminate our innermost being. He searches our depths — nothing is hidden from His light.

28

Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upholden by mercy.

Spiritual Insight

Mercy and truth preserve a leader, and their throne is sustained by steadfast love. Leadership without compassion eventually crumbles.

29

The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the grey head.

Spiritual Insight

Young people have the glory of strength, and the elderly have the beauty of gray hair. Every season of life has its own God-given splendor.

30

The blueness of a wound cleanseth away evil: so do stripes the inward parts of the belly.

Spiritual Insight

Sometimes pain is what cleanses us — wounds and discipline can purify the deepest parts of who we are. God can use even our hurts to heal us.
