Proverbs Chapter 13

KJV — King James Version · 25 verses

1

A wise son heareth his father’s instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke.

Spiritual Insight

A wise child listens when their father teaches. But a scoffer tunes out even the most loving correction.

2

A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence.

Spiritual Insight

When you speak with kindness and wisdom, you nourish your own soul. But those who live by transgression consume violence instead of good.

3

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

Spiritual Insight

Guarding your words is actually guarding your life. Opening your mouth without thought opens the door to disaster.

4

The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.

Spiritual Insight

The lazy person desires everything but achieves nothing. The diligent, however, find their desires abundantly satisfied.

5

A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

Spiritual Insight

A righteous person has no stomach for lies—they find them repulsive. The wicked, comfortable with falsehood, eventually stumble into shame.

6

Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner.

Spiritual Insight

Righteousness acts as a guardian for those who walk in it. Wickedness, however, becomes the very thing that overthrows the sinner.

7

There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches.

Spiritual Insight

Some people pretend to be rich but have nothing at all. Others appear poor yet possess true, lasting wealth. Reality and appearance are rarely the same.

8

The ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke.

Spiritual Insight

Wealth can sometimes serve as a ransom to protect your life. The poor, having nothing to offer, at least avoid certain kinds of trouble.

9

The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

Spiritual Insight

The light of a righteous person shines brightly and joyfully. But the lamp of the wicked is snuffed out, leaving only darkness.

10

Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Spiritual Insight

Most conflict is born from pride—someone insisting on being right. Wisdom is found among those who are willing to listen and be advised.

11

Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.

Spiritual Insight

Money that comes quickly and easily tends to disappear just as fast. Wealth built through patient labor grows steadily and lasts.

12

Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.

Spiritual Insight

Waiting endlessly for something you hope for wears down your heart until it feels sick. But when that desire finally comes true, it breathes fresh life into your soul.

13

Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded.

Spiritual Insight

Treating God's word with contempt leads to destruction. But those who honor His commands will discover a reward beyond what they imagined.

14

The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Spiritual Insight

The teaching of a wise person is like a spring of water that sustains life. It guides you away from the hidden traps that lead to death.

15

Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.

Spiritual Insight

Good understanding wins you favor and opens doors. But the path of those who rebel against what is right is rough, painful, and lonely.

16

Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.

Spiritual Insight

A prudent person acts with knowledge and intention. A fool, on the other hand, proudly broadcasts their own ignorance.

17

A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health.

Spiritual Insight

An unreliable messenger causes trouble wherever they go. But a trustworthy messenger brings healing and relief.

18

Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.

Spiritual Insight

Rejecting instruction leads straight to poverty and shame. But the person who accepts correction with humility will eventually be honored.

19

The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

Spiritual Insight

There's a deep sweetness when a long-held desire is finally fulfilled. Yet fools find it repugnant to even consider turning away from evil.

20

He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

Spiritual Insight

Walk with wise people and you'll become wiser yourself. Keep company with fools and their downfall will become yours too.

21

Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.

Spiritual Insight

Trouble chases after sinners like a relentless pursuer. But goodness finds the righteous and rewards them faithfully.

22

A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

Spiritual Insight

A good person leaves something meaningful for generations yet unborn. And ironically, the wealth of sinners eventually ends up serving what is right.

23

Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.

Spiritual Insight

Even the poor can produce abundance through careful cultivation. But without good judgment, even great resources are wasted.

24

He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.

Spiritual Insight

Withholding discipline from a child isn't love—it's neglect. True love corrects early and consistently, because you care about who they're becoming.

25

The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.

Spiritual Insight

The righteous eat with deep satisfaction, body and soul. But the wicked, no matter how much they consume, always feel empty inside.
