Holy Bible/Nahum/Chapter 2

Nahum Chapter 2

KJV — King James Version · 13 verses

1

He that dasheth in pieces is come up before thy face: keep the munition, watch the way, make thy loins strong, fortify thy power mightily.

Spiritual Insight

The attacker is coming, and Nineveh is told to brace itself. But all the preparation in the world can't stop what God has decreed. Human effort without God is ultimately futile.

2

For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.

Spiritual Insight

Even as God judges Nineveh, He promises to restore Jacob's glory. God never destroys without purpose — He clears the way for restoration. Judgment and hope are always paired.

3

The shield of his mighty men is made red, the valiant men are in scarlet: the chariots shall be with flaming torches in the day of his preparation, and the fir trees shall be terribly shaken.

Spiritual Insight

Red shields, scarlet uniforms, flaming chariots — the battle imagery is vivid and terrifying. This is war as it really is: brutal, overwhelming, and in God's hands.

4

The chariots shall rage in the streets, they shall justle one against another in the broad ways: they shall seem like torches, they shall run like the lightnings.

Spiritual Insight

Chariots racing like lightning through the streets — the speed and chaos of Nineveh's downfall is breathtaking. What seemed invincible is suddenly vulnerable. No empire lasts forever.

5

He shall recount his worthies: they shall stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.

Spiritual Insight

The officers stumble as they rush to the walls — even the elite are panicked. When God moves against a city, no amount of military planning can save it.

6

The gates of the rivers shall be opened, and the palace shall be dissolved.

Spiritual Insight

The river gates open and the palace dissolves — nature itself joins the attack. Nineveh's mighty defenses crumble from within. The strongest walls can't withstand God's timing.

7

And Huzzab shall be led away captive, she shall be brought up, and her maids shall lead her as with the voice of doves, tabering upon their breasts.

Spiritual Insight

The queen is taken captive, her maids mourn like doves — the human cost of empire's fall is real and heartbreaking. Behind every collapsed nation are grieving people.

8

But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.

Spiritual Insight

Nineveh was once full of people like a pool of water, but now everyone flees. 'Stand, stand!' they cry, but no one looks back. When confidence shatters, panic is instantaneous.

9

Take ye the spoil of silver, take the spoil of gold: for there is none end of the store and glory out of all the pleasant furniture.

Spiritual Insight

Take the silver, take the gold — endless wealth now becomes plunder. All the riches that seemed so permanent are suddenly carried off by strangers. Wealth is never a permanent shelter.

10

She is empty, and void, and waste: and the heart melteth, and the knees smite together, and much pain is in all loins, and the faces of them all gather blackness.

Spiritual Insight

Empty, void, waste — hearts melt, knees knock, faces turn pale. The physical description of fear is visceral. When God removes His protection, terror is the only response.

11

Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feedingplace of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion’s whelp, and none made them afraid?

Spiritual Insight

Where is the lions' den now? The predators who once terrorized others are gone. It's a haunting question — what happened to all that power and dominance? It simply vanished.

12

The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin.

Spiritual Insight

The lion tore prey for its cubs, strangled for its lionesses — Nineveh's violence was calculated and thorough. But what they built through brutality would be their own undoing.

13

Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will burn her chariots in the smoke, and the sword shall devour thy young lions: and I will cut off thy prey from the earth, and the voice of thy messengers shall no more be heard.

Spiritual Insight

God says directly: I am against you. Those four words — 'I am against you' — from the Creator of the universe are the most terrifying thing anyone could hear. No enemy could be worse.
