Holy Bible/John/Chapter 3

John Chapter 3

KJV — King James Version · 36 verses

1

There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:

Spiritual Insight

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler—someone with status and a reputation to protect. Yet something drew him to Jesus. Curiosity can be the beginning of something beautiful.

2

The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

Spiritual Insight

He came by night, probably hoping no one would see. But he came honestly: we know you're from God. Even a cautious, private seeking is still seeking—and Jesus honors that.

3

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus skipped the small talk and went straight to the point: you must be born again. Not reformed, not improved—born anew. It's not about trying harder; it's about starting over.

4

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

Spiritual Insight

Nicodemus took it literally—how can an old man climb back into his mother's womb? It's okay to be confused. Honest questions are welcome, even when we're missing the point entirely.

5

Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Spiritual Insight

Born of water and the Spirit—Jesus was talking about a spiritual reality, not a physical one. This new birth is something God does in us, not something we manufacture ourselves.

6

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Spiritual Insight

Flesh gives birth to flesh, Spirit gives birth to spirit. They operate in different realms. You can't produce spiritual life through human effort—it has to come from God's Spirit.

7

Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.

Spiritual Insight

Don't be surprised, Jesus said gently. This isn't something you could have figured out on your own. Some truths are revealed, not deduced—and that's okay.

8

The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

Spiritual Insight

The wind blows where it wants—you hear it but can't control it. That's what the Spirit is like: mysterious, unpredictable, and wonderfully free. You can't box Him in.

9

Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

Spiritual Insight

Nicodemus asked again: how can this be? He was still stuck, and that's a perfectly honest place to be. Sometimes we need to sit in our confusion before understanding breaks through.

10

Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

Spiritual Insight

Jesus challenged him: you're a teacher of Israel and you don't know this? Knowledge without spiritual insight can leave us stranded. Theology needs the Spirit to come alive.

11

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.

Spiritual Insight

We speak of what we know, Jesus said, but you don't receive our testimony. There's a sadness in that—truth offered but refused. Jesus wasn't speculating; He was sharing firsthand experience.

12

If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?

Spiritual Insight

If you don't believe the earthly things I'm telling you, how will you believe heavenly ones? Faith builds—each step of trust prepares us for the next, deeper mystery.

13

And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

Spiritual Insight

No one has gone up to heaven except the one who came down from it—the Son of Man. Jesus isn't just a teacher about heaven; He's from heaven, carrying its authority.

14

And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:

Spiritual Insight

Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, the Son of Man must be lifted up. The image is strange—a serpent on a pole, a Savior on a cross. Healing comes through looking at what seems like defeat.

15

That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Spiritual Insight

Whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. Not might have, not could have—will have. That's a promise that holds steady no matter what.

16

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Spiritual Insight

God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. This verse is the heart of everything—love that gives, not takes. And it's for everyone, no exceptions.

17

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Spiritual Insight

He didn't come to condemn the world but to save it. If God's primary posture toward us is rescue, not rejection, maybe we should see ourselves and others that way too.

18

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Spiritual Insight

Whoever believes isn't condemned. The verdict has already been given—it's just waiting to be accepted. Unbelief isn't a punishment; it's simply refusing the cure.

19

And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

Spiritual Insight

The condemnation is this: light came, and people preferred the darkness. Not because they didn't have a choice, but because their deeds were evil and the light felt threatening.

20

For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

Spiritual Insight

Everyone who does evil hates the light and avoids it, afraid of exposure. It takes courage to step into the light, but that's where healing and freedom live.

21

But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Spiritual Insight

But whoever lives by truth comes to the light, so their deeds can be seen as God's work. There's no shame in being seen when your life is being shaped by honesty and grace.

22

After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

Spiritual Insight

After this conversation, Jesus went out into the countryside with His disciples and spent time with them there. Ministry wasn't just teaching—it was being together.

23

And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

Spiritual Insight

John was still baptizing too, at Aenon near Salim, where there was plenty of water. Both ministries were happening simultaneously—John wasn't done yet.

24

For John was not yet cast into prison.

Spiritual Insight

This was before John was put in prison. The narrative pauses to remind us of the timeline—John's freedom was limited, and he probably knew it.

25

Then there arose a question between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purifying.

Spiritual Insight

A dispute arose about purification between John's disciples and some Jews. Even in ministry, disagreements happen. The question is whether they distract from the main thing.

26

And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

Spiritual Insight

John's disciples came to him worried: the one you testified about is now baptizing too, and everyone is going to Him. Ministry jealousy is as old as ministry itself.

27

John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

Spiritual Insight

John's response was beautifully grounded: a person can only receive what's given from heaven. Your calling is yours. Comparing it to someone else's is a losing game.

28

Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

Spiritual Insight

I told you already—I'm not the Christ. I was sent ahead of Him. John knew his role and was content with it. There's deep peace in embracing the part you were made to play.

29

He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

Spiritual Insight

The bride belongs to the bridegroom, and the friend of the bridegroom rejoices to hear his voice. John saw himself as the best man, not the groom—content to celebrate someone else's moment.

30

He must increase, but I must decrease.

Spiritual Insight

He must increase, but I must decrease. Six words that contain a whole philosophy of life. True greatness isn't about building your own platform—it's about making room for Jesus.

31

He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

Spiritual Insight

The one who comes from above is above all. Earthly voices speak earthly things, but the one from heaven speaks with heaven's authority. There's no comparison.

32

And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

Spiritual Insight

He testifies to what He's seen and heard, yet no one receives His testimony. It's the tragic refrain of John's gospel—truth spoken, truth rejected. But He keeps speaking anyway.

33

He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

Spiritual Insight

Whoever does receive His testimony certifies that God is true. To believe Jesus is to put your seal on God's trustworthiness. Faith is saying: I believe You mean what You say.

34

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

Spiritual Insight

The one God sent speaks God's words, and God gives the Spirit without limit. There's no rationing of the Spirit for Jesus—full, overflowing, unhindered.

35

The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

Spiritual Insight

The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in His hands. That's total trust—every resource, every authority, everything. The Father doesn't hold back.

36

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Spiritual Insight

Whoever believes the Son has eternal life. Not will have someday—has it now. And whoever refuses? The consequences are already in motion. The invitation is urgent, and it's standing open.
