Holy Bible/John/Chapter 16

John Chapter 16

KJV — King James Version · 33 verses

1

These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus warns us ahead of time so we won't be shaken. He doesn't want us blindsided by hardship — He wants us prepared and rooted.

2

They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

Spiritual Insight

It's sobering that people can do terrible things while convinced they're serving God. Sincerity without truth can lead us very far astray.

3

And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

Spiritual Insight

At the root of so much cruelty is simply not knowing God. When we don't understand the Father's heart, we easily misrepresent Him.

4

But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus is honest with us when we're ready to hear it. He didn't overwhelm the disciples early on — He timed His words with tender wisdom.

5

But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?

Spiritual Insight

Sometimes grief makes us forget to ask the important questions. The disciples were so absorbed in their sorrow that they missed the bigger picture.

6

But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Spiritual Insight

It's okay that hard news fills our heart with sorrow. Jesus doesn't dismiss their pain — He acknowledges it before offering hope.

7

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

Spiritual Insight

What feels like loss can actually be God setting up something better. Jesus leaving made way for the Spirit to come and dwell with us always.

8

And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Spiritual Insight

The Spirit doesn't just comfort us — He confronts what's wrong in the world. He shines light on sin, points to what's right, and reveals what's coming.

9

Of sin, because they believe not on me;

Spiritual Insight

The core of sin isn't just bad behavior — it's refusing to trust Jesus. The Spirit gently shows us where we've been holding back belief.

10

Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;

Spiritual Insight

Righteousness isn't about our effort — it's about where Jesus went. Because He returned to the Father, we stand righteous before God.

11

Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

Spiritual Insight

The ruler of this world has already been judged and defeated. That's not a future event — it's a done deal, even when things look dark.

12

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus is patient with our capacity. He doesn't dump everything on us at once — He teaches us at the pace we can bear.

13

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

Spiritual Insight

The Spirit of truth doesn't make things up — He shares what He hears from the Father. He's our personal guide into deeper understanding over time.

14

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Spiritual Insight

The Spirit's whole mission is to point us to Jesus. He never draws attention to Himself — He glorifies Christ and reveals what belongs to Him.

15

All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Spiritual Insight

Everything the Father has belongs to Jesus, and Jesus shares it with us through the Spirit. That's an incredible chain of generosity.

16

A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus speaks in mystery here — a little while without Him, then a little while and they'll see Him again. Even confusing words hold a promise.

17

Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?

Spiritual Insight

The disciples were honest about their confusion. They didn't pretend to understand — they puzzled over His words together.

18

They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.

Spiritual Insight

Sometimes we just don't get it, and that's okay. 'We cannot tell what He saith' is a refreshingly honest admission.

19

Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?

Spiritual Insight

Jesus notices our unspoken questions. He saw their desire to understand and met them right where they were.

20

Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

Spiritual Insight

Pain and joy can coexist in the same story. Your tears now are real, but they're not the ending — sorrow will transform into something beautiful.

21

A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

Spiritual Insight

Like a mother in labor, the pain is intense but purposeful. The joy on the other side makes the anguish worth every moment.

22

And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.

Spiritual Insight

This is a promise you can hold onto: joy that no one can steal. Not circumstantial happiness, but deep, unshakeable gladness.

23

And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.

Spiritual Insight

A day is coming when we won't need to ask questions — we'll have direct access to the Father through Jesus' name. That's breathtaking intimacy.

24

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Spiritual Insight

Jesus actually wants our joy to be full. He's not stingy — He invites us to ask boldly and receive generously.

25

These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.

Spiritual Insight

Figurative language has its place, but clarity is coming. Jesus promises a day when things won't be cryptic anymore — He'll show us the Father plainly.

26

At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:

Spiritual Insight

We don't need a go-between anymore. Jesus says we can ask the Father directly in His name — that's how much access we've been given.

27

For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.

Spiritual Insight

The Father Himself loves you — not because you earned it, but because you love His Son. Your affection for Jesus opens the Father's heart to you.

28

I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

Spiritual Insight

This is the whole arc of Jesus' story: sent from the Father, coming into the world, and returning home. Everything in between is love poured out.

29

His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.

Spiritual Insight

There's relief when someone finally speaks plainly. The disciples brighten — 'Now You're talking clearly!' Sometimes we just need things said simply.

30

Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.

Spiritual Insight

A beautiful moment of confident faith — 'Now we're sure.' They saw Jesus' knowledge as proof of His origin. Moments like these are gifts.

31

Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?

Spiritual Insight

Jesus' gentle question 'Do you now believe?' isn't mockery — it's a loving nudge. He knows the road ahead will test this newfound confidence.

32

Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

Spiritual Insight

Even knowing they'll scatter, Jesus isn't alone — the Father stays. When everyone walks away, God's presence remains the one constant.

33

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Spiritual Insight

This might be the most encouraging verse in the Bible. Yes, there will be trouble — but take heart, because Jesus has already won.
