1 Corinthians Chapter 1
KJV — King James Version · 31 verses
Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
Spiritual Insight
Paul introduces himself not by his own merit but by God's calling — a reminder that our purpose often comes from somewhere beyond ourselves. Even the greatest journeys begin with a simple "yes" to God.
Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
Spiritual Insight
The church isn't a building — it's people set apart, called to be saints together. You're part of something much bigger than your own story.
Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Spiritual Insight
Grace and peace — Paul's favorite greeting, and honestly, what we all need most. Before any instruction, there's a blessing waiting for you.
I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ;
Spiritual Insight
Imagine someone thanking God for *you* every time they pray. Paul models what it means to see God's grace in others and celebrate it.
That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge;
Spiritual Insight
God doesn't just save you and leave you empty — He enriches you with words and understanding. You have more than you think.
Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you:
Spiritual Insight
The testimony of Christ isn't just words on a page — it gets confirmed *in* you, through your life and experience. Your story is proof.
So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Spiritual Insight
You're not lacking any spiritual gift while you wait. God equips you fully for the waiting season, not just the arrival.
Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Spiritual Insight
God's confirmation isn't temporary — He carries you all the way to the end. You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be held by the One who is.
God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
Spiritual Insight
At the heart of your calling is an invitation: fellowship with Jesus. God didn't just save you from something — He saved you *into* relationship.
Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
Spiritual Insight
Unity doesn't mean uniformity — it means being joined together in purpose and love. Division weakens; togetherness strengthens the whole family.
For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
Spiritual Insight
News of conflict traveled fast even back then. It's sobering that others notice our divisions — and it matters enough for Paul to address directly.
Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
Spiritual Insight
Team loyalty is fine for sports, but destructive in the church. When we rally around personalities instead of Christ, everyone loses.
Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
Spiritual Insight
Paul's rhetorical question hits hard — Christ cannot be divided. No leader, no movement, no cause deserves the allegiance that belongs to Jesus alone.
I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
Spiritual Insight
Paul is almost relieved he didn't baptize many people there — not out of neglect, but to keep the focus on the gospel, not on himself.
Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
Spiritual Insight
Sometimes the best thing a leader can do is step out of the spotlight. Paul wanted nothing that might make people follow a person instead of the Savior.
And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
Spiritual Insight
Even Paul's memory was imperfect — he forgot who he baptized. It's comforting that God uses imperfect people with imperfect memories.
For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
Spiritual Insight
The core mission is simple: preach the gospel. Not with flashy rhetoric, but with the raw power of the cross. Eloquence can't save — only Christ can.
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
Spiritual Insight
The cross divides perception — to some it's nonsense, to others it's everything. Which camp you're in changes how you see the whole world.
For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
Spiritual Insight
God isn't impressed by human credentials. He deliberately overturns the world's definition of wisdom, making room for something far deeper.
Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?
Spiritual Insight
Where are the great thinkers now? God's questions cut through every intellectual fortress. True wisdom starts with admitting we don't have all the answers.
For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
Spiritual Insight
It's almost humorous — God chose preaching, of all things, as His rescue plan. Not a philosophy, not a system, but a simple message proclaimed with conviction.
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
Spiritual Insight
Different cultures ask different questions — Jews want proof, Greeks want ideas. But God offers something neither expected: a crucified Savior.
But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;
Spiritual Insight
Christ crucified is the great stumbling stone — offensive to the religious and absurd to the intellectuals. Yet this is the very center of our faith.
But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
Spiritual Insight
But for those who are called, everything changes. The stumbling block becomes the cornerstone. What seemed foolish is now the truest wisdom they've ever known.
Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
Spiritual Insight
God's "foolishness" outsmarts every human genius. His "weakness" outmuscles every human strength. The categories we use just don't apply to Him.
For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:
Spiritual Insight
Take a look around — God didn't recruit an elite squad. He called ordinary, overlooked people. That's not a bug; it's the design.
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;
Spiritual Insight
God loves an underdog story. He picks what the world dismisses to prove that His power, not human talent, is what makes the difference.
And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
Spiritual Insight
Even the things that "are not" — the nobodies, the forgotten — God uses to bring down the proud. Your perceived nothingness is His opportunity.
That no flesh should glory in his presence.
Spiritual Insight
The ultimate goal is clear: no one gets to boast in God's presence. All self-congratulation dissolves when we see what grace has actually done.
But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:
Spiritual Insight
In Christ, you receive a package deal: wisdom, righteousness, holiness, redemption. You don't earn them — you receive them because you're *in* Him.
That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.
Spiritual Insight
If you're going to boast, boast in the Lord. Let your pride be in what He has done, not in what you've achieved. That's the only safe kind of boasting.
