Proverbs 第 23

KJV — King James Version · 35

1

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

Spiritual Insight

When dining with a ruler, pay attention to what's before you. Discernment matters especially in the presence of power.

2

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

Spiritual Insight

If you tend to overindulge, put a knife to your throat. Self-control protects you from compromising situations.

3

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

Spiritual Insight

Don't crave the ruler's delicacies — the food is deceptive. Not everything that looks appealing serves your true good.

4

Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

Spiritual Insight

Don't wear yourself out to get rich — have the wisdom to show restraint. The pursuit of wealth can consume your very life.

5

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

Spiritual Insight

Wealth can grow wings and fly away like an eagle toward the sky. Hold money loosely; it was never meant to be your security.

6

Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

Spiritual Insight

Don't eat the food of a stingy person or crave their delicacies. Their generosity is an illusion — they're calculating every bite.

7

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

Spiritual Insight

They're always thinking about the cost, saying 'Eat and drink' but resenting it in their heart. Forced hospitality breeds bitterness.

8

The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

Spiritual Insight

You'll vomit up what you've eaten and waste your pleasant words. Some meals come with too high a price.

9

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

Spiritual Insight

Don't speak to a fool — they'll despise the wisdom of your words. Save your breath for those who genuinely want to hear.

10

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

Spiritual Insight

Don't move the ancient boundary stone or encroach on the fields of the fatherless. Protecting the vulnerable is sacred work.

11

For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

Spiritual Insight

Their Redeemer is strong — He will plead their case against you. God is the advocate for those who have no defender.

12

Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

Spiritual Insight

Apply your heart to discipline and your ears to words of knowledge. Growth requires both openness and effort.

13

Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

Spiritual Insight

Don't withhold discipline from a child — punishment won't kill them. Loving correction is far more compassionate than neglect.

14

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

Spiritual Insight

Punish them and you'll save them from death itself. Sometimes the hardest love is the most life-saving.

15

My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

Spiritual Insight

My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice. Nothing brings a parent more joy than seeing wisdom take root in their child.

16

Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

Spiritual Insight

My inmost being will celebrate when your lips speak what is right. The words of a wise child are music to a parent's soul.

17

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

Spiritual Insight

Don't let your heart envy sinners — always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. What they have isn't worth what they've lost.

18

For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

Spiritual Insight

There is surely a future hope for you, and your expectations will not be cut off. The righteous path leads somewhere beautiful.

19

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

Spiritual Insight

Listen, my child, and be wise — keep your heart on the right path. Wisdom is both a gift and a daily choice.

20

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

Spiritual Insight

Don't join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat. Excess dulls the very senses you need most.

21

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

Spiritual Insight

Drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. Indulgence has a way of stripping away everything valuable.

22

Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

Spiritual Insight

Listen to your father who gave you life, and don't despise your mother when she is old. Honoring your parents is wisdom in action.

23

Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Spiritual Insight

Buy truth and never sell it — get wisdom, discipline, and understanding. Some things are worth any price and should never be traded away.

24

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

Spiritual Insight

The father of a righteous child has great joy — a child who is wise brings him delight. Your growth is someone else's greatest happiness.

25

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

Spiritual Insight

May your father and mother rejoice — may she who gave you birth be joyful! Living well is the best gift you can give those who raised you.

26

My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

Spiritual Insight

My child, give me your heart and let your eyes delight in my ways. Wholehearted devotion opens the door to true understanding.

27

For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

Spiritual Insight

An adulteress is a deep pit and a narrow well — falling in is easier than climbing out. Steer clear before you even get close.

28

She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

Spiritual Insight

She lies in wait like a robber, increasing the faithless among people. Temptation is patient and strategic — be more alert than it is.

29

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

Spiritual Insight

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?

30

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

Spiritual Insight

Those who linger over wine, who go searching for mixed drinks. The drinker's misery begins long before the last glass.

31

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

Spiritual Insight

Don't gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly. Beauty can mask danger.

32

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

Spiritual Insight

In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. What feels pleasant now can wound you deeply later.

33

Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

Spiritual Insight

Your eyes will see strange sights and your mind will imagine confusing things. Intoxication distorts reality and scrambles judgment.

34

Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

Spiritual Insight

You'll be like someone sleeping at the helm of a ship, adrift on the high seas. Without clear-headedness, you lose all direction.

35

They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Spiritual Insight

'They hit me, but it didn't hurt! They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?' Addiction makes us love what harms us.
