Ezra 第 8
KJV — King James Version · 36 節
These are now the chief of their fathers, and this is the genealogy of them that went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king.
Spiritual Insight
Ezra carefully recorded who came with him. Every person mattered enough to be named. In God's work, the roster of participants is important.
Of the sons of Phinehas; Gershom: of the sons of Ithamar; Daniel: of the sons of David; Hattush.
Spiritual Insight
Gershom from Phinehas, Daniel from Ithamar, Hattush from David — priestly and royal lines were represented. Every background has a place in God's mission.
Of the sons of Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh; Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty.
Spiritual Insight
150 men from Shechaniah's family came with Zechariah. Even smaller groups were part of the larger story of return.
Of the sons of Pahathmoab; Elihoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males.
Spiritual Insight
200 men from Pahathmoab went with Elihoenai. Each clan leader brought his people — leadership means bringing others along.
Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males.
Spiritual Insight
300 men came with the son of Jahaziel. Not everyone's name is recorded, but their numbers were. Every participant counts.
Of the sons also of Adin; Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males.
Spiritual Insight
50 men from Adin's family with Ebed. A small group, but faithful. The size of your team doesn't determine the significance of your obedience.
And of the sons of Elam; Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males.
Spiritual Insight
70 men from Elam with Jeshaiah. They left what was familiar to pursue God's calling. Obedience often means leaving comfort behind.
And of the sons of Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him fourscore males.
Spiritual Insight
80 men from Shephatiah with Zebadiah. They didn't wait for a more convenient time — they went when God called.
Of the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males.
Spiritual Insight
218 men from Joab with Obadiah. One of the larger family groups, showing that whole communities can respond to God together.
And of the sons of Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and threescore males.
Spiritual Insight
160 men from Shelomith. They saw the opportunity to return and seized it. Opportunities from God shouldn't be postponed.
And of the sons of Bebai; Zechariah the son of Bebai, and with him twenty and eight males.
Spiritual Insight
28 men from Bebai — a small but willing group. Sometimes the smallest teams are the most dedicated.
And of the sons of Azgad; Johanan the son of Hakkatan, and with him an hundred and ten males.
Spiritual Insight
110 men from Azgad with Johanan. They brought enough people to form a meaningful contribution to the community.
And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them threescore males.
Spiritual Insight
60 men from Adonikam — the 'last ones' listed, perhaps the ones who were most hesitant. But they came, and that's what mattered.
Of the sons also of Bigvai; Uthai, and Zabbud, and with them seventy males.
Spiritual Insight
70 men from Bigvai with Uthai and Zabbud. The list ends, but the journey was just beginning for all of them.
And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi.
Spiritual Insight
Ezra gathered everyone at the Ahava River and realized there were no Levites. Sometimes the most essential workers are the hardest to recruit.
Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding.
Spiritual Insight
Ezra sent for specific leaders — men of understanding. When you have a gap, find the right people to fill it.
And I sent them with commandment unto Iddo the chief at the place Casiphia, and I told them what they should say unto Iddo, and to his brethren the Nethinims, at the place Casiphia, that they should bring unto us ministers for the house of our God.
Spiritual Insight
He sent them to Casiphia to recruit Levites and temple servants. Ezra was resourceful — when there was a need, he found a solution.
And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;
Spiritual Insight
God's good hand provided a man of insight along with 18 Levites. When you step out in faith, God fills the gaps you couldn't fill yourself.
And Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, his brethren and their sons, twenty;
Spiritual Insight
20 more Levites from Merari's family came with Hashabiah. The team was growing — God was assembling exactly what was needed.
Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.
Spiritual Insight
220 temple servants, all listed by name, joined the group. Even the support staff were known by name to God.
Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river of Ahava, that we might afflict ourselves before our God, to seek of him a right way for us, and for our little ones, and for all our substance.
Spiritual Insight
Ezra proclaimed a fast to humble themselves before God and seek a safe journey. Before any big step, it's wise to seek God's guidance together.
For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.
Spiritual Insight
Ezra was embarrassed to ask the king for soldiers because he had told him God protects His people. Sometimes our public faith commits us to private dependence on God.
So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us.
Spiritual Insight
They fasted and prayed, and God answered. The simplest formula in Scripture: seek God, and He responds.
Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them,
Spiritual Insight
Ezra set apart 12 leading priests for the sacred task of carrying the offerings. Important responsibilities deserve careful selection of trustworthy people.
And weighed unto them the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, even the offering of the house of our God, which the king, and his counsellors, and his lords, and all Israel there present, had offered:
Spiritual Insight
He weighed out the silver, gold, and vessels before entrusting them. Accountability and trust go together — faithful stewardship includes careful record-keeping.
I even weighed unto their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels an hundred talents, and of gold an hundred talents;
Spiritual Insight
650 talents of silver, 100 talents of silver vessels, 100 talents of gold — an enormous treasure entrusted to human hands. God trusts His people with great resources.
Also twenty basons of gold, of a thousand drams; and two vessels of fine copper, precious as gold.
Spiritual Insight
20 gold bowls and 2 fine copper vessels as precious as gold. In God's economy, value isn't always measured in gold — sometimes copper vessels are just as treasured.
And I said unto them, Ye are holy unto the LORD; the vessels are holy also; and the silver and the gold are a freewill offering unto the LORD God of your fathers.
Spiritual Insight
Ezra reminded them: 'You are holy to the Lord, and so are these vessels.' Sacred responsibility requires sacred awareness — you carry what belongs to God.
Watch ye, and keep them, until ye weigh them before the chief of the priests and the Levites, and chief of the fathers of Israel, at Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD.
Spiritual Insight
He charged them to guard everything until it could be weighed again in Jerusalem. Trustworthy stewardship means protecting what's been entrusted to you.
So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.
Spiritual Insight
The priests and Levites accepted the responsibility. They received the treasure knowing they would give an account. Faithful people accept accountability.
Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.
Spiritual Insight
They departed on the twelfth day, and God delivered them from enemies and ambushes. The prayer had been answered — the journey was safe.
And we came to Jerusalem, and abode there three days.
Spiritual Insight
They arrived in Jerusalem and rested three days. After a long journey, rest is not laziness — it's necessary recovery before the work begins.
Now on the fourth day was the silver and the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites;
Spiritual Insight
On the fourth day, everything was weighed and verified by multiple witnesses. Transparency and accountability protected everyone's integrity.
By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was written at that time.
Spiritual Insight
Everything was counted and weighed, and a written record was made. Good stewardship leaves a paper trail — accountability prevents misunderstanding.
Also the children of those that had been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD.
Spiritual Insight
The returnees offered burnt offerings — 12 bulls for all Israel, plus rams, lambs, and sin offerings. Gratitude expressed through sacrifice is a powerful form of worship.
And they delivered the king’s commissions unto the king’s lieutenants, and to the governors on this side the river: and they furthered the people, and the house of God.
Spiritual Insight
They delivered the king's orders to the governors, who supported the people and the temple. God's provision came through both supernatural and bureaucratic channels.
