The Christmas Story
Biblical accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ

The Prophecy
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Micah 5:2
But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Spiritual Insight
Centuries before Jesus was born, the prophets foretold His coming with remarkable precision — a virgin would conceive, and the Messiah would be born in humble Bethlehem. These promises reveal God's sovereign plan unfolding across generations.
The Annunciation
Luke 1:30-31
And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
Luke 1:35
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Spiritual Insight
The angel Gabriel's announcement to Mary is a moment of divine grace. A young woman in a small town is chosen to bear the Son of God — not because of her status, but because of God's favour. Her faithful response, "Be it unto me according to thy word," models surrender to God's will.
The Journey to Bethlehem
Luke 2:4-5
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
Spiritual Insight
A Roman census compelled Joseph and Mary to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem — a journey of roughly 90 miles. In God's providence, this imperial decree fulfilled Micah's prophecy that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem. Even the actions of worldly empires serve God's eternal purposes.
The Birth of Jesus
Luke 2:6-7
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Matthew 1:24-25
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.
Spiritual Insight
The King of kings was born not in a palace but in a humble stable, laid in a feeding trough. This scene captures the heart of the Gospel — God chose the lowly and overlooked to accomplish His greatest work. The Creator of the universe entered His own creation in the most vulnerable way imaginable.
The Shepherds and Angels
Luke 2:10-11
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
Luke 2:13-14
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
Spiritual Insight
The first announcement of Christ's birth went not to kings or priests, but to shepherds — ordinary workers watching their flocks by night. The heavenly host's song, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace," declares that Jesus came to bring peace between God and humanity for all who receive Him.
The Wise Men
Matthew 2:1-2
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
Matthew 2:10-11
When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
Spiritual Insight
Wise men from the East followed a star to find the newborn King, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Their journey shows that the coming of Christ was not only for Israel but for all nations. The gifts foreshadow His life: gold for a king, frankincense for a priest, and myrrh for one who would die.
