2 John Capítulo 1
KJV — King James Version · 13 versículos
The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
Spiritual Insight
The elder opens not with commands but with love — love rooted in truth. There's something beautiful about a greeting that says "I genuinely care about you, and so does everyone who knows what's real." It reminds us that real community forms around shared truth, not just shared interests.
For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
Spiritual Insight
Truth isn't just an idea floating around — it dwells in us and stays with us forever. That's a pretty bold claim. When we embrace what's true about God, it becomes part of who we are, not just something we agree with.
Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
Spiritual Insight
Grace, mercy, and peace — all three flow from the Father and the Son, and they travel together through truth and love. It's like John is saying: you don't have to choose between being truthful and being loving. God's gifts come wrapped in both.
I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.
Spiritual Insight
Nothing fills a mentor's heart like seeing the next generation actually living out what they've been taught. John's joy here is personal — he didn't just hope they'd walk in truth, he actually saw it happening. That kind of joy is contagious.
And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.
Spiritual Insight
John is gentle here — he's not inventing something new, he's circling back to the oldest command: love one another. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do isn't learning something new, but simply returning to what we've always known and actually doing it.
And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
Spiritual Insight
Love and obedience are woven together here — love IS walking in His commands. It's not a feeling that comes and goes; it's a direction we choose to walk. And the path isn't complicated: just keep going in what you've heard from the beginning.
For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
Spiritual Insight
There are people who sound convincing but deny the core of who Jesus is — God come in the flesh. John doesn't mince words: that's deception. It takes courage to stand firm when the culture around us blurs the lines, but some things really do matter.
Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
Spiritual Insight
"Watch yourselves" — it's a personal warning. Don't let all the spiritual progress you've made slip away. There's a full reward waiting, but it requires staying alert. Spiritual life isn't a one-time decision; it's an ongoing vigilance.
Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
Spiritual Insight
Staying close to Christ's teaching isn't about being rigid — it's about staying connected to God Himself. To abide in His doctrine is to have both the Father and the Son. Drifting from it means drifting from the very source of life.
If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
Spiritual Insight
This sounds harsh in our anything-goes culture, but John is serious about protecting the community from false teaching. Hospitality is a Christian virtue, but it doesn't mean rolling out the welcome mat for ideas that undermine the gospel.
For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
Spiritual Insight
Even a polite greeting can become complicity. John isn't saying be rude — he's saying be aware. When we enthusiastically endorse someone who teaches falsely, we share in the damage they cause. Our everyday choices carry more weight than we think.
Having many things to write unto you, I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.
Spiritual Insight
Some things are better said face to face. Paul's longing here reveals the warmth of real community — texts and letters are wonderful, but nothing replaces sitting across from someone and talking until your hearts are full. Joy was meant to be shared in person.
The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.
Spiritual Insight
The letter ends with a simple family greeting — the children of your sister send their love. It's a quiet reminder that the church is a family, connected across cities and generations by bonds deeper than blood.
