1 Corinthians Capítulo 14
KJV — King James Version · 40 versículos
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.
Spiritual Insight
Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts — especially prophecy. Love isn't opposed to gifts; it's the foundation. Build gifts on love, and they become powerful.
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
Spiritual Insight
Speaking in tongues speaks to God, not people — it's a mystery between you and Him. Beautiful in its own way, but not as useful for the community.
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
Spiritual Insight
Prophecy speaks to people for edification, encouragement, and comfort. A word that builds someone up is one of the most powerful gifts you can offer.
He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
Spiritual Insight
Tongues edify yourself; prophecy edifies the church. Both are good, but one serves the many. Love always tilts toward what helps the most people.
I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.
Spiritual Insight
Paul wishes everyone spoke in tongues, but even more that they prophesied. The greater gift is the one that builds up the whole community.
Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?
Spiritual Insight
If Paul came speaking only tongues, it wouldn't help them. Communication needs clarity. A revelation, a teaching, a word of prophecy — that's what feeds the soul.
And even things without life giving sound, whether pipe or harp, except they give a distinction in the sounds, how shall it be known what is piped or harped?
Spiritual Insight
Even lifeless instruments need clear notes. A flute or harp without distinction is just noise. Beauty in communication comes from clarity.
For if the trumpet give an uncertain sound, who shall prepare himself to the battle?
Spiritual Insight
An unclear trumpet call won't prepare anyone for battle. When the message matters, clarity matters even more. Speak so people can respond.
So likewise ye, except ye utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken? for ye shall speak into the air.
Spiritual Insight
If your words aren't understandable, you're just speaking into the air. Communication is a gift to the listener — make sure they can actually receive it.
There are, it may be, so many kinds of voices in the world, and none of them is without signification.
Spiritual Insight
There are many languages, and each has meaning. God values every tongue and culture — the goal isn't to erase difference but to bridge it.
Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice, I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian, and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me.
Spiritual Insight
Without understanding, we're foreigners to each other. The gap between people isn't just language — it's willingness to meet someone in their world.
Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.
Spiritual Insight
Be eager for spiritual gifts, but excel in building up the church. Passion for the spectacular should never outrun passion for people's growth.
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
Spiritual Insight
If you speak in tongues, pray for interpretation. The desire to be understood is a sign of love for those listening.
For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.
Spiritual Insight
Praying in tongues without understanding leaves the mind unfruitful. Your spirit prays, but your mind stays on the sidelines. Both should be engaged.
What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
Spiritual Insight
Pray with the spirit and with the understanding. Sing with the spirit and with the understanding. God wants all of you — heart and mind together.
Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
Spiritual Insight
If someone can't understand your blessing, how can they say amen? Worship should invite participation, not create isolation.
For thou verily givest thanks well, but the other is not edified.
Spiritual Insight
You may be giving thanks beautifully, but if the other person isn't built up, they're left out. Love considers the listener.
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
Spiritual Insight
Paul speaks in tongues more than all of them — he's not anti-tongues. He simply puts love for others above personal spiritual experience.
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
Spiritual Insight
Five words with understanding beat ten thousand in an unknown tongue. Clarity is an act of love. Say less, but make it count.
Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men.
Spiritual Insight
Don't be children in understanding — be mature. But in evil, be like little children who haven't learned it yet. Discernment in truth, innocence in sin.
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the LORD.
Spiritual Insight
Even in the Old Testament, God said He would speak through foreign lips — and still they wouldn't listen. Sometimes the messenger isn't the problem; the heart is.
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
Spiritual Insight
Tongues are a sign for unbelievers, prophecy for believers. Different gifts serve different purposes — and God uses both to draw people to Himself.
If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
Spiritual Insight
If everyone speaks tongues and an outsider walks in, they'll think you're crazy. The appearance of chaos doesn't draw people to God — love and order do.
But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
Spiritual Insight
But if everyone prophesies, the outsider is convicted and called to account. A clear, loving word can pierce the hardest heart.
And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
Spiritual Insight
The secrets of the heart are revealed, and the person falls down to worship God. When God's Word speaks with love and clarity, it does what no argument can.
How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
Spiritual Insight
When you gather, each one has something — a psalm, a teaching, a tongue. But let everything be for building up. The goal is always edification.
If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
Spiritual Insight
Speaking in tongues should be limited — two or three, one at a time, with interpretation. God's Spirit is orderly; our gatherings should reflect that.
But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
Spiritual Insight
No interpreter? Then be silent and speak to God alone. Self-restraint in worship is an act of love for the community.
Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
Spiritual Insight
Two or three prophets speak, and the others weigh carefully. Accountability keeps the community grounded. Even prophecy needs discernment.
If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
Spiritual Insight
If a revelation comes to someone sitting by, the first speaker should stop. The Spirit's word isn't a monologue — it's a shared conversation.
For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.
Spiritual Insight
All can prophesy one by one, so everyone learns and is encouraged. Room for many voices, but with order. That's how the body grows.
And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.
Spiritual Insight
The spirits of prophets are subject to prophets. You're not powerless under the Spirit's movement — you can be both passionate and self-controlled.
For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.
Spiritual Insight
God is not a God of confusion but of peace. Order in worship reflects God's character. Beauty and peace go hand in hand.
Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
Spiritual Insight
This passage about women keeping silent is deeply cultural and has been debated for centuries. Whatever your interpretation, the broader context always points to order, respect, and love in worship.
And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.
Spiritual Insight
Paul addresses specific cultural practices of his day. The enduring principle is that worship should honor both God and the community gathered.
What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
Spiritual Insight
Did the word of God originate with you? Paul gently reminds them they're not the source of truth — just recipients. Humility keeps the church teachable.
If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.
Spiritual Insight
If anyone thinks they're spiritual, let them recognize Paul's words as the Lord's command. True spirituality includes submission to God's authority.
But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant.
Spiritual Insight
If anyone ignores this, let them be ignored. Not every argument deserves engagement — sometimes the most loving response is to let it go.
Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
Spiritual Insight
Be eager to prophesy, and don't forbid tongues. Both have their place. God's family is big enough for many expressions of His Spirit.
Let all things be done decently and in order.
Spiritual Insight
Let everything be done decently and in order. Not rigid, not robotic — but beautiful and purposeful. That's how God does things.
